00:00:09.660 --> 00:00:11.009
So stay tuned.
00:00:16.917 --> 00:00:25.867
If you want to have real and powerful influence over the money and policy decisions that impact your organization and the people you serve, then you're in the right place.
00:00:26.446 --> 00:00:39.426
I'm Kath Patrick and I've helped dozens of progressive nonprofit leaders take their organizations to new and higher levels of impact and success by building powerful influence with the decision makers that matter.
00:00:40.057 --> 00:00:48.447
It is possible to get a critical mass of the money and policy decision makers in your world to be as invested in your success as you are.
00:00:48.756 --> 00:00:51.277
To have them seeking you out as an equal partner.
00:00:51.716 --> 00:00:55.436
And to have them Bringing opportunities and resources to you.
00:00:56.046 --> 00:00:58.176
This podcast will help you do just that.
00:00:58.646 --> 00:01:01.476
Welcome to the Nonprofit Power Podcast.
00:01:07.165 --> 00:01:07.825
Hey everybody.
00:01:07.825 --> 00:01:08.875
Kath Patrick here.
00:01:09.234 --> 00:01:13.704
Thank you so much for tuning in to another episode of the Nonprofit Power Podcast.
00:01:14.034 --> 00:01:16.194
I'm so glad you're here for today's episode.
00:01:16.888 --> 00:01:24.731
One of the most underrated and underappreciated tools in the toolkits of the most effective nonprofit leaders is vision.
00:01:25.311 --> 00:01:32.721
The truth is whether it's in Nonprofit land or anywhere else, nothing big ever happens without a vision.
00:01:33.278 --> 00:01:40.808
Whether it's at the community level or worldwide, big ambitious things take vision in order to bring them about.
00:01:41.510 --> 00:01:46.460
And it also requires the ability to transform that vision into reality.
00:01:48.146 --> 00:01:48.775
Hey there folks.
00:01:48.775 --> 00:01:50.936
Welcome to the Nonprofit Power Podcast.
00:01:51.236 --> 00:01:52.406
I'm your host, Kath, Patrick.
00:01:53.006 --> 00:01:57.296
Chances are you already have a vision about how you want some things to be.
00:01:57.915 --> 00:02:03.465
But if you want that vision to become a reality, it's going to require some very specific things from you.
00:02:04.305 --> 00:02:06.975
Just having the vision isn't enough.
00:02:07.498 --> 00:02:11.878
You have to pursue that vision through consistent, concrete action.
00:02:12.568 --> 00:02:16.949
And that's no easy thing because there are a million things that get in the way.
00:02:17.609 --> 00:02:26.399
And so you also have to be able to train yourself in some core practices and habits that will allow you to actually bring that vision to reality.
00:02:27.278 --> 00:02:31.308
So the first thing is finding and identifying your vision.
00:02:31.842 --> 00:02:33.042
You might have more than one.
00:02:33.491 --> 00:02:38.836
It could be a grand long-term vision of something really big.
00:02:39.201 --> 00:02:41.899
Or it could be something narrower and nearer term.
00:02:42.299 --> 00:02:42.868
Or both.
00:02:43.526 --> 00:02:59.968
So a, grand vision at say the community level would be something like, everyone in the community has a medical home where they regularly receive high quality and affordable care from caring professionals.
00:03:00.575 --> 00:03:03.725
So, you know, that's clearly a long-term goal.
00:03:03.846 --> 00:03:04.175
Right.
00:03:04.276 --> 00:03:09.156
That's a big aspirational goal that it will take a lot to make happen.
00:03:10.056 --> 00:03:18.468
A really common and concrete example of a medium term and fairly specific vision is say, a new building.
00:03:18.975 --> 00:03:22.756
Or a piece of landmark policy or legislation..
00:03:23.466 --> 00:03:32.135
Those are the kinds of visions you can build a campaign around because they're near enough term, and specific enough, that lend themselves to campaigns.
00:03:32.776 --> 00:03:36.831
Those big grand visions might involve multiple campaigns.
00:03:37.442 --> 00:03:39.062
They might even involve a movement.
00:03:40.252 --> 00:03:43.109
But whether it's grand and long-term.
00:03:43.491 --> 00:03:46.558
Or kind of medium size, medium term.
00:03:46.908 --> 00:03:50.795
Just those broad strokes of a vision are not going to get you there.
00:03:51.628 --> 00:03:57.036
So once you have identified your vision, Then it's time to clarify it.
00:03:57.519 --> 00:04:02.598
And the more detailed and the more vivid it is, the better.
00:04:03.169 --> 00:04:13.081
You want to paint a picture in the greatest possible detail, of what it will look like when your vision has happened.
00:04:14.066 --> 00:04:14.566
Why?
00:04:15.175 --> 00:04:16.766
Partly because brain science.
00:04:17.442 --> 00:04:28.591
It's been demonstrated over and over that the more strongly you are able to visualize an outcome or an action, the greater the chances of it actually coming into being.
00:04:29.012 --> 00:04:36.541
And one of my favorite examples of how powerful visualization is, is work that's been done with athletes.
00:04:37.255 --> 00:04:40.386
As an example, Neuroscientists have worked with tennis players.
00:04:40.956 --> 00:04:47.319
And they've had them I visualize a particular technique or a stroke, whatever it is that they want to work on.
00:04:47.949 --> 00:04:49.766
And they're sitting in a chair.
00:04:49.795 --> 00:04:51.505
They're imagining this activity.
00:04:51.505 --> 00:04:53.156
They're not actually doing anything.
00:04:53.185 --> 00:04:54.505
They don't have a racket in their hand.
00:04:54.505 --> 00:04:56.456
They don't have a tennis ball anywhere near them.
00:04:57.096 --> 00:05:00.576
The coach talks with them initially about what it is they need to work on.
00:05:01.026 --> 00:05:06.125
Then they visualize that new movement, that thing that they need to execute on.
00:05:07.146 --> 00:05:10.206
And they have found that two things happen.
00:05:10.625 --> 00:05:20.315
One, there is actually measurable growth in those muscles that are being worked in the mind, but not in actuality.
00:05:20.925 --> 00:05:22.605
That's how powerful the connection is.
00:05:22.966 --> 00:05:25.336
The body just says, okay.
00:05:25.935 --> 00:05:27.045
We've done this.
00:05:27.341 --> 00:05:28.812
We need more muscle to do it.
00:05:29.112 --> 00:05:29.771
There you go.
00:05:29.771 --> 00:05:30.822
There's the more muscle.
00:05:31.685 --> 00:05:37.675
And when they get out on the court, they are able to execute that new technique or stroke perfectly.
00:05:37.975 --> 00:05:41.005
Because they have practiced it over and over again in their mind.
00:05:42.005 --> 00:05:46.036
Basically your brain doesn't know the difference between imagination and reality.
00:05:46.656 --> 00:05:52.372
If you can visualize something strongly and powerfully enough your subconscious will decide that it is real.
00:05:53.242 --> 00:05:58.059
And it will begin filtering to you, all the things that will help you make it be real.
00:05:58.988 --> 00:06:02.259
So that's part of why it's so important to visualize this strongly.
00:06:03.009 --> 00:06:08.848
And the other part which we'll get to in a minute, is that if you're not clear on it, nobody else will be either.
00:06:09.798 --> 00:06:12.348
And you're going to need to be able to communicate this eventually.
00:06:13.192 --> 00:06:16.492
So there's a lot of ways you can do this, whatever works for you.
00:06:16.492 --> 00:06:19.711
And I'm a fan of doing more than one.
00:06:20.329 --> 00:06:22.468
So definitely write it down.
00:06:22.822 --> 00:06:24.562
But also you might want to draw it.
00:06:24.956 --> 00:06:27.526
You might want to literally paint it.
00:06:27.925 --> 00:06:30.386
You might want to build a 3d model of it.
00:06:30.735 --> 00:06:31.735
A diorama.
00:06:32.211 --> 00:06:34.161
Whatever modalities work for you.
00:06:34.985 --> 00:06:37.776
Don't limit yourself to words on a page.
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:42.158
You're going to need those words on a page because it's one of the primary ways we communicate.
00:06:42.668 --> 00:06:43.478
But we're not there.
00:06:43.478 --> 00:06:44.829
We're not to the communicating part.
00:06:44.829 --> 00:06:48.788
We're just talking about getting this vision clear in your own mind.
00:06:49.598 --> 00:06:51.369
And whatever helps you do that.
00:06:51.899 --> 00:06:53.939
Dioramas, Lego's.
00:06:54.358 --> 00:06:56.189
Paintings, drawings.
00:06:56.651 --> 00:07:04.156
Whatever works to help you visualize in extreme detail, in vivid detail is what you want.
00:07:04.875 --> 00:07:08.896
And when you think you have enough detail, add even more.
00:07:09.656 --> 00:07:12.889
This shouldn't just be a physical description of the thing.
00:07:13.492 --> 00:07:14.721
Although that's important.
00:07:15.259 --> 00:07:16.249
You start there.
00:07:16.815 --> 00:07:21.502
But also you want to bring to life what it means.
00:07:21.951 --> 00:07:24.232
How it feels when it's been created.
00:07:25.069 --> 00:07:29.132
Very few visions are hatched without there being some passion behind it.
00:07:29.192 --> 00:07:31.915
So include your passion in that vision.
00:07:32.365 --> 00:07:36.716
How does it feel to you when that vision is brought to life?
00:07:37.406 --> 00:07:41.906
How does it feel to the people that are a part of that, who benefit from that vision?
00:07:41.906 --> 00:07:42.865
How do they feel?
00:07:42.865 --> 00:07:44.216
What is changing for them?
00:07:44.742 --> 00:07:50.052
How it's creating ripple effects throughout the community or whatever scale you're operating on.
00:07:50.891 --> 00:08:05.771
So get all of that captured definitely in writing, but then ideally in at least one other modality that helps you literally have a picture in your head that is bright and clear and vivid.
00:08:06.490 --> 00:08:10.180
That you can almost see and touch and walk around in.
00:08:10.613 --> 00:08:12.084
And feel into.
00:08:12.620 --> 00:08:13.670
You need all of it.
00:08:14.788 --> 00:08:18.627
So once you've done that, then you're ready to share that vision.
00:08:19.517 --> 00:08:21.228
And that's a crucial next step.
00:08:21.891 --> 00:08:24.754
Nothing visionary gets done by one person alone.
00:08:24.937 --> 00:08:25.208
Right.
00:08:25.644 --> 00:08:27.244
It's going to take more people.
00:08:27.788 --> 00:08:31.807
And ideally more people who are as invested in this vision as you are.
00:08:32.443 --> 00:08:34.303
So you'll need to share your vision.
00:08:34.778 --> 00:08:41.488
And your ability to communicate your vision is absolutely critical to bringing it into reality.
00:08:42.927 --> 00:08:47.697
So you're going to do all the things that you just did for yourself.
00:08:48.597 --> 00:08:50.158
You're going to do when you communicate.
00:08:50.307 --> 00:08:52.977
You're going to be painting the verbal picture for sure.
00:08:53.474 --> 00:08:57.244
And words are a primary tool for communication, of course.
00:08:57.303 --> 00:09:01.913
So you want to be able to paint a robust picture with your words.
00:09:02.557 --> 00:09:08.118
And don't just paint the two dimensional, fact based vision.
00:09:08.597 --> 00:09:09.707
Communicate all of it.
00:09:10.427 --> 00:09:13.870
Communicate the feeling, communicate the emotions that go with it.
00:09:13.900 --> 00:09:15.941
Communicate the ripple effect.
00:09:15.971 --> 00:09:21.610
Communicate who's being impacted, and how, and how does that change things and how does it feel?
00:09:22.538 --> 00:09:23.947
And as you do this.
00:09:24.437 --> 00:09:28.107
As you begin to craft your verbal painting.
00:09:28.524 --> 00:09:30.083
Try it out on a few people.
00:09:30.528 --> 00:09:36.107
And see if they can see what you see, in the same vivid detail.
00:09:36.770 --> 00:09:40.941
See if they feel into it the same way you feel into it.
00:09:41.730 --> 00:09:44.004
And notice their reactions.
00:09:44.004 --> 00:09:45.653
Notice where they are with that.
00:09:45.683 --> 00:09:49.224
Notice how much they're getting into it, or how they're not.
00:09:49.974 --> 00:09:51.890
And keep refining.
00:09:52.278 --> 00:10:00.677
Keep refining your picture in quotes until everyone you share it with can see it as clearly as you can.
00:10:01.734 --> 00:10:05.878
Now, it might not be the case that everyone's going to be as excited as you are.
00:10:05.908 --> 00:10:07.347
It's your vision after all.
00:10:08.110 --> 00:10:16.821
No matter what, even somebody who's not particularly like-minded should be able to see the picture that you have in your head, in all its 3d glory.
00:10:17.403 --> 00:10:27.860
And then folks who are reasonably like minded should not only see that 3d in all its beautiful color and gloriousness, but they should be feeling into it with you as well.
00:10:28.368 --> 00:10:30.437
And you'll be able to tell when that's happening.
00:10:31.130 --> 00:10:34.378
But that's where you want to get with your ability to talk about this.
00:10:34.921 --> 00:10:36.841
Because that's how you're going to bring people along.
00:10:36.870 --> 00:10:40.561
That's how you're going to get others invested in helping you bring this vision to reality.
00:10:41.480 --> 00:10:42.530
So that's awesome.
00:10:43.094 --> 00:10:45.374
And then here comes reality.
00:10:45.823 --> 00:10:46.214
Right.
00:10:47.024 --> 00:10:50.683
Staying grounded in your vision is not easy.
00:10:51.634 --> 00:10:54.514
There are a thousand distractions every day.
00:10:55.038 --> 00:10:59.268
There's all kinds of rude realities, jumping in from every corner.
00:10:59.553 --> 00:11:02.903
Trying to pull you away from focusing on your vision.
00:11:03.618 --> 00:11:09.837
And to stay grounded in your vision, you're going to need some practices that work for you.
00:11:10.541 --> 00:11:14.980
Practices to help you stay grounded, centered, focused on your vision.
00:11:15.490 --> 00:11:17.312
This is somewhat individual.
00:11:17.568 --> 00:11:22.999
But I have found,and have spoken with many other leaders who use a lot of these.
00:11:23.418 --> 00:11:27.936
So these are some common ones that tend to work for lots of people.
00:11:28.792 --> 00:11:31.056
One very, important practice.
00:11:31.265 --> 00:11:35.375
And if you don't do anything else, be sure that you do this.
00:11:36.099 --> 00:11:41.216
Begin each day with some kind of a practice to ground you in your vision.
00:11:41.782 --> 00:11:45.375
It could be taking five minutes to journal on your vision.
00:11:45.778 --> 00:11:48.086
Keep a vision journal that is just for that.
00:11:48.688 --> 00:11:53.259
And spend five minutes just getting present to your vision.
00:11:53.708 --> 00:11:54.818
Journaling about it.
00:11:55.389 --> 00:11:57.129
How you're feeling about it that day.
00:11:57.609 --> 00:12:00.458
What you're excited about to try to move forward that day.
00:12:00.509 --> 00:12:02.355
Whatever is present for you.
00:12:02.871 --> 00:12:05.451
But begin your day with a focus on that vision.
00:12:05.932 --> 00:12:10.692
And remember that that is ultimately what you're focused on getting done.
00:12:11.499 --> 00:12:14.649
Some other things that work very well are visualization.
00:12:15.005 --> 00:12:24.479
Spend five minutes just bringing that beautiful 3d, rich tapestry painting to life in your mind.
00:12:24.849 --> 00:12:28.436
And just live in that for a few minutes at the beginning of each day.
00:12:29.405 --> 00:12:32.590
Another thing that can work if you're more auditory.
00:12:33.169 --> 00:12:37.480
You can create a simple recording for yourself on your phone or wherever.
00:12:37.850 --> 00:12:39.409
And play that back to yourself.
00:12:40.220 --> 00:12:43.614
You can record not only the description of the vision, but all of it.
00:12:44.073 --> 00:12:46.803
What it looks like when it's done, how it feels when it's done.
00:12:47.903 --> 00:12:50.874
And play that for yourself at the beginning of each day.
00:12:51.750 --> 00:12:57.490
Those are a few techniques that have worked well for lots of leaders, so give one or more of those, a try.
00:12:57.907 --> 00:13:00.134
And then that's just how you begin your day.
00:13:01.309 --> 00:13:06.610
Now it should go without saying that vision without action doesn't get you very far either.
00:13:07.570 --> 00:13:15.913
So we also have to be conscious about how we're building in 3-d action to bring about the vision.
00:13:16.547 --> 00:13:19.364
And consistency is super important.
00:13:19.874 --> 00:13:23.820
But so is consistently focusing on the right things.
00:13:24.797 --> 00:13:32.933
And so a very helpful practice that you can add as you're doing your morning focus, whether you're doing a journal or whatever you're doing.
00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:42.976
The other thing you want to do every morning before you start your workday, is after you've grounded yourself in your vision, using whatever techniques work for you.
00:13:43.494 --> 00:13:53.360
The next thing you do is you ask yourself, what is the one most important thing that I can do today that will move me closer to that vision?
00:13:54.057 --> 00:13:58.346
And whatever that one thing is, you have one every single day.
00:13:58.929 --> 00:14:05.006
And you block time on your calendar every day to work on that one thing.
00:14:05.876 --> 00:14:10.134
Now this works best if once you begin to create this practice of.
00:14:10.149 --> 00:14:17.057
Vision focused work, part of how you create your calendar for the day, the week, the month, the quarter.
00:14:17.453 --> 00:14:20.994
Is that every day has a piece of time.
00:14:21.594 --> 00:14:22.703
You decide how much.
00:14:23.464 --> 00:14:29.267
Blocked out to focus on whatever your most important thing for the vision is that day.
00:14:30.159 --> 00:14:35.897
And what will be helpful is if you pick a time of day when you are at your best.
00:14:36.488 --> 00:14:42.826
Don't have this be the thing you do at the end of a long day full of pesky little tasks.
00:14:43.403 --> 00:14:50.813
Pick the time of day when you are at your most creative, your most energized, your most powerful, your most visionary.
00:14:51.413 --> 00:14:54.083
And schedule that block of time in that spot.
00:14:54.734 --> 00:14:56.303
And then actually do it.
00:14:57.278 --> 00:15:04.868
Another critical piece is to cultivate the ability to notice when you get pulled away from the vision.
00:15:05.498 --> 00:15:06.985
What tends to cause that.
00:15:07.621 --> 00:15:09.152
And it's different for everybody.
00:15:09.481 --> 00:15:16.514
We all have our things that can yank us out of vision mode pretty reliably.
00:15:17.154 --> 00:15:30.581
Whether it's stress about finances, or 15 brush fires happening in the office or in the field, or, a, upset board member calling or an upset funder.
00:15:30.981 --> 00:15:35.432
Whatever it is that tends to really kind of derail you.
00:15:36.238 --> 00:15:38.817
Or maybe it's more the mundane stuff that gets you.
00:15:39.238 --> 00:15:48.607
That you get so caught up in the endless to-do lists, all the little things, the tasks that have to happen in order to make the place run.
00:15:49.144 --> 00:15:52.235
And get the work done and keep the money coming in and all of that.
00:15:53.217 --> 00:15:55.707
So it's going to be different for everybody.
00:15:55.947 --> 00:16:03.245
The question is what are the things that tend to A) pull you away from your vision.
00:16:03.798 --> 00:16:09.751
And B kind of demoralize you and take you out of visionary mode.
00:16:10.607 --> 00:16:13.278
So the first part of the practice is simply to notice.
00:16:13.774 --> 00:16:14.764
What are those things?
00:16:14.764 --> 00:16:16.625
What tends to cause that for you?
00:16:17.625 --> 00:16:24.217
And then to develop a practice to bring you back to your vision when those things happen.
00:16:25.148 --> 00:16:30.894
Something to allow you to step away mentally or physically from the trigger.
00:16:31.427 --> 00:16:34.937
And to reground, recenter on vision.
00:16:36.095 --> 00:16:42.985
Now it's important to note of course, that doing this will not make the thing go away that was distracting you.
00:16:43.705 --> 00:16:44.695
It'll still be there.
00:16:45.544 --> 00:16:49.567
And a lot of this is about creating habits, about creating practice.
00:16:50.018 --> 00:16:51.878
So the thing will still be there.
00:16:52.658 --> 00:17:02.477
But recentering, regrounding in vision will allow you to address that thing from the perspective of, what will move you closer to the vision?
00:17:03.258 --> 00:17:09.275
And that is really at the heart of what successful visionary leaders are able to do.
00:17:10.065 --> 00:17:20.535
There are very few, if any, leaders out there in the world who have the luxury of doing nothing but just focusing on their vision.
00:17:20.894 --> 00:17:24.644
And talking about their vision and bringing other people along on their vision.
00:17:24.644 --> 00:17:26.365
And that's what they do 24/7.
00:17:27.015 --> 00:17:29.625
You know, if you've got that gig, yay for you.
00:17:29.625 --> 00:17:30.914
That is awesome.
00:17:31.424 --> 00:17:34.154
But it's not the reality for most nonprofit leaders.
00:17:34.454 --> 00:17:41.345
Most of us are trying to stay focused on the vision while everything in our environment is trying to pull us away from it.
00:17:42.275 --> 00:17:45.214
Trying to get us to focus on the small stuff.
00:17:46.234 --> 00:17:58.301
And so what separates the successful visionary leaders from the ones who struggle, are that the successful ones operate from their vision consistently.
00:17:59.178 --> 00:18:03.317
So your goal is to act and operate from your vision.
00:18:04.008 --> 00:18:07.728
Let your vision guide your actions and your decision-making.
00:18:07.978 --> 00:18:08.637
Every day.
00:18:09.377 --> 00:18:11.357
Not just when there aren't distractions.
00:18:11.357 --> 00:18:13.248
Cause that will be about the 12th of never.
00:18:14.077 --> 00:18:16.928
But to cultivate practices that will let you do that.
00:18:17.738 --> 00:18:21.092
And with time and practice, you will get better at it.
00:18:21.585 --> 00:18:22.964
And it will take less effort.
00:18:24.085 --> 00:18:35.592
So one key practice that you can begin right away is to ask the question at every opportunity: will this thing, whatever it is, move us closer to the vision?
00:18:36.011 --> 00:18:37.211
Or further away?
00:18:37.902 --> 00:18:44.711
Make that be one of the screening questions you ask about absolutely everything that jumps in your path.
00:18:45.384 --> 00:18:49.317
Especially ask this when problems or challenges come up.
00:18:50.041 --> 00:18:58.565
Because I think that's when vision tends to get shoved to the back seat more often than any other time is when there's a crisis.
00:18:59.115 --> 00:19:01.684
And like, oh my God, we got to deal with this thing.
00:19:02.055 --> 00:19:05.897
Aah! You know, Vision is for when things are going great.
00:19:05.897 --> 00:19:08.057
But right now I just got to focus on the problem.
00:19:08.714 --> 00:19:10.904
And actually that's not really quite right.
00:19:11.417 --> 00:19:14.835
Because presumably that vision has value.
00:19:15.392 --> 00:19:20.798
It's not just oh, gosh, wouldn't it be nice if this thing were so.
00:19:21.458 --> 00:19:25.208
This is your vision as a nonprofit leader because it matters.
00:19:25.208 --> 00:19:27.307
Because it matters to the people you serve.
00:19:27.307 --> 00:19:28.807
It matters to the community.
00:19:29.018 --> 00:19:33.008
It would make a huge difference if this thing happened.
00:19:33.731 --> 00:19:35.444
So it's not optional.
00:19:36.248 --> 00:19:40.298
It's not, oh, you know, if everything's going great, we'll worry about that.
00:19:40.298 --> 00:19:42.938
But otherwise, ah, you know, whatever, not such a big deal.
00:19:43.208 --> 00:19:44.498
It's a very big deal.
00:19:45.561 --> 00:19:52.842
So when challenges and problems come up, those are the things that tend to make us focus on the small stuff.
00:19:53.951 --> 00:19:55.061
And make no mistake.
00:19:55.061 --> 00:19:56.951
You've got to deal with the problems and challenges.
00:19:56.951 --> 00:19:57.635
Of course.
00:19:58.228 --> 00:20:11.478
But begin to practice dealing with them by having at least one of your decision-making questions be, how will one course of action or another, in response to this challenge or problem.
00:20:12.278 --> 00:20:15.968
Which of these possible courses of action will move us closer to the vision.
00:20:16.644 --> 00:20:18.714
And which will move us further away.
00:20:19.298 --> 00:20:22.057
And then pick the one that moves your closest to the vision.
00:20:23.188 --> 00:20:26.488
This also comes up when opportunities jump in your path.
00:20:26.988 --> 00:20:32.087
And this can get a little tricky, because it's hard to say no to an opportunity.
00:20:32.458 --> 00:20:32.817
Oof.
00:20:32.958 --> 00:20:35.117
Really hard, especially if it's a really good one.
00:20:35.855 --> 00:20:42.458
And I'm not suggesting that the question about vision is the only one, the only determining factor.
00:20:43.055 --> 00:20:53.998
But absolutely, when opportunities jump in your path, it's equally important to ask the question: will pursuing this opportunity move us closer to that vision?
00:20:54.298 --> 00:20:55.557
Or further away?
00:20:56.647 --> 00:21:08.134
Some opportunities, as awesome as they are, might represent enough of a change in direction or focus that they could have a really detrimental effect on the pursuit of your vision.
00:21:08.964 --> 00:21:11.811
So it's important to pay attention to that.
00:21:12.471 --> 00:21:21.464
Again, There may be a preponderance of things that cause you to decide to pursue it, even if it will move you further from your vision.
00:21:22.015 --> 00:21:23.694
Although boy, that better be good.
00:21:24.565 --> 00:21:27.444
But at least you will be making a conscious decision.
00:21:27.444 --> 00:21:31.105
You will not be saying, yes, let's go after this opportunity.
00:21:31.105 --> 00:21:33.055
And then six months later going, oh, dang.
00:21:33.055 --> 00:21:34.974
That really took us away from the vision, didn't it.
00:21:35.214 --> 00:21:35.454
Hmm.
00:21:35.904 --> 00:21:36.474
Now what?
00:21:37.377 --> 00:21:39.521
So always be asking that question.
00:21:40.134 --> 00:21:42.954
And factor it in to your decision making process.
00:21:44.172 --> 00:21:53.382
Also be aware that it might be a series of actions or a series of decisions that are going to get made in the face of this opportunity or challenge.
00:21:53.971 --> 00:21:55.801
So don't just ask the question once.
00:21:56.375 --> 00:21:57.835
Each time there's a new action.
00:21:58.095 --> 00:21:59.684
Each time there's a new decision.
00:21:59.894 --> 00:22:01.902
It's worth asking that question again.
00:22:02.948 --> 00:22:09.097
One of the things this will do is develop the habit of staying centered and focused on your vision.
00:22:09.798 --> 00:22:16.194
It doesn't mean that you will always make the decision to do the thing that will take you closer to the vision.
00:22:16.224 --> 00:22:20.424
There will be times when you may consciously choose to move away from it.
00:22:21.045 --> 00:22:23.857
But the goal here is to be conscious about it.
00:22:24.974 --> 00:22:37.208
And the other thing that's going to happen, is that if you are regrounding in your vision every day, if you are getting serious about a practice of beginning your day with a centering and grounding in your vision.
00:22:37.998 --> 00:22:43.758
It will become the case that there is hardly a moment when that vision is not present in your mind.
00:22:44.147 --> 00:22:44.867
Vividly.
00:22:45.474 --> 00:22:49.285
And when that's there all the time it becomes your guide.
00:22:50.251 --> 00:22:55.682
And with your vision guiding you, that's when you start making real progress toward that vision.
00:22:57.028 --> 00:23:08.592
So as with most things, this is a combination of developing awareness, creating some consistent practices and then actually following them on a daily basis.
00:23:09.285 --> 00:23:15.174
And within a couple of months, you're going to find that this becomes routine.
00:23:15.832 --> 00:23:19.714
And once it becomes routine, then it starts to shift how you operate.
00:23:20.458 --> 00:23:24.535
And eventually it becomes a subconscious driver of how you operate.
00:23:25.285 --> 00:23:29.001
And that's when you start becoming a vision centered leader.
00:23:29.682 --> 00:23:30.761
A visionary leader.
00:23:31.444 --> 00:23:35.434
Cause you can't be visionary if you only think about the vision once in a while.
00:23:36.535 --> 00:23:36.924
So.
00:23:37.117 --> 00:23:38.137
Stuff to think about.
00:23:39.092 --> 00:23:45.362
Operating from a clear vision is absolutely the most reliable way to make big things happen.
00:23:46.112 --> 00:23:56.021
And when you don't have a vision, it's almost inevitable that you'll get sidetracked and wind up focused on all the little immediate things that jump in front of you every day.
00:23:56.988 --> 00:24:01.877
Training yourself to develop the vision and then to stay grounded in it, no matter what.
00:24:02.357 --> 00:24:04.038
No matter what's happening around you.
00:24:04.488 --> 00:24:06.887
Will allow you to get to your big vision.
00:24:07.248 --> 00:24:10.907
And to get there much faster than you would have otherwise.
00:24:11.644 --> 00:24:12.575
Thanks for listening.
00:24:12.958 --> 00:24:16.827
And I'll see you in the next episode right here on the Nonprofit Power Podcast.
