A Few Early Thoughts About the Recent Elections

A Few Early Thoughts About the Recent Elections

This is a really tough time for all of us in the progressive nonprofit world. And I wanted to share a few early thoughts, even as we don't have complete answers on all of the election results. But we have some very important information and it's not good. Many of us, including me, thought this election was going to turn out a lot better than it did.

And given the results, we have a lot of challenges facing us in the next couple of years at the very least. There's going to be a lot to say in the days and weeks to come, and a lot of thinking and strategizing to do in that time. But right now for these few days, as we process what we know so far, and hope for at least a positive outcome in the House where we still don't know the results. I want to share some thoughts about what I believe is most important for us to focus on.

We have an extraordinary amount of work in front of us, and there are going to be some things that are different about that hard work that we haven't quite had to deal with before. The good news is we're all in this together. And we're going to find our way forward together.

In this episode, we share:

  • The two most important things to focus on in the next couple of weeks to prepare for the work ahead
  • Some things to be aware of about what your team is dealing with, and how to support them
  • Pitfalls of one of the most common coping strategies among nonprofit leaders
  • The powerful role vison can play in taking you forward

If you found value in this episode, please share it with other progressive nonprofit leaders.  And I’d be grateful if you would leave a rating and review on Apple podcasts, which will help even more people find out about this podcast.

Thanks!

You're listening to the Nonprofit Power Podcast.

00:00:03.029 --> 00:00:08.039
In today's episode, I'm sharing a few early thoughts about the recent election.

00:00:08.279 --> 00:00:09.570
So stay tuned.

00:00:15.650 --> 00:00:24.609
If you want to have real and powerful influence over the money and policy decisions that impact your organization and the people you serve, then you're in the right place.

00:00:25.190 --> 00:00:38.170
I'm Kath Patrick and I've helped dozens of progressive nonprofit leaders take their organizations to new and higher levels of impact and success by building powerful influence with the decision makers that matter.

00:00:38.789 --> 00:00:47.179
It is possible to get a critical mass of the money and policy decision makers in your world to be as invested in your success as you are.

00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:50.030
To have them seeking you out as an equal partner.

00:00:50.460 --> 00:00:54.170
And to have them Bringing opportunities and resources to you.

00:00:54.780 --> 00:00:56.920
This podcast will help you do just that.

00:00:57.380 --> 00:01:00.320
Welcome to the Nonprofit Power Podcast.

00:01:05.873 --> 00:01:06.512
Hey there folks.

00:01:06.512 --> 00:01:08.492
Welcome to the Nonprofit Power podcast.

00:01:08.912 --> 00:01:10.141
I'm your host, Kath Patrick.

00:01:10.561 --> 00:01:12.481
I'm so glad you're here for today's episode.

00:01:13.019 --> 00:01:15.608
This is a really tough time for all of us.

00:01:15.698 --> 00:01:24.899
And I wanted to share a few early thoughts, even as we don't have complete answers on all of the election results.

00:01:24.899 --> 00:01:29.069
But we have some very important information and it's not good.

00:01:29.674 --> 00:01:33.754
Many of us, including me, thought this election was going to turn out a lot better than it did.

00:01:34.174 --> 00:01:41.561
And given the results, we have a lot of challenges facing us in the next couple of years at the very least.

00:01:42.212 --> 00:01:50.954
So there's going to be a lot to say in the days and weeks to come and a lot of thinking and strategizing to do in that time.

00:01:51.674 --> 00:02:02.078
But right now for these few days, as we process what we know so far and hope for at least a positive outcome in the House, yet we still don't know those results.

00:02:02.978 --> 00:02:09.534
In these few days, I wanted to share some thoughts about what I believe is most important for us to focus on.

00:02:09.921 --> 00:02:15.104
And to just share with you what's on my heart about this.

00:02:15.859 --> 00:02:17.299
We're all in this together.

00:02:17.778 --> 00:02:20.231
And we're going to find our way forward together.

00:02:20.872 --> 00:02:23.961
We have an extraordinary amount of work in front of us.

00:02:24.412 --> 00:02:26.241
And we all know that.

00:02:26.602 --> 00:02:33.681
But I think there are going to be some things that are different about that hard work that we haven't quite had to deal with before.

00:02:34.516 --> 00:02:41.477
But before we get to any of that we have the very present reality that many of us are grieving.

00:02:42.137 --> 00:02:47.753
And I want to underscore the importance of self care in this time.

00:02:48.343 --> 00:02:51.343
Whatever that looks like for you and for your team.

00:02:51.554 --> 00:02:54.334
But this is a deeply felt loss.

00:02:54.663 --> 00:02:59.503
And many, many of us in the progressive community are absolutely grieving.

00:03:00.426 --> 00:03:01.836
We will move through that grief.

00:03:02.616 --> 00:03:06.396
And when we do, we'll be ready to take action and roll up our sleeves and get to work.

00:03:07.497 --> 00:03:09.236
But grief deserves its room.

00:03:09.717 --> 00:03:13.437
And we have to give it that space for our own health.

00:03:13.947 --> 00:03:16.197
For our physical health and our emotional health.

00:03:16.856 --> 00:03:25.760
And so I just want to share how important it is that we be gentle with ourselves, and gentle with each other in this time.

00:03:26.661 --> 00:03:35.480
One of the things that I've noticed about myself and about others around me is that our ability to focus is not great right now.

00:03:36.260 --> 00:03:37.700
People are really distracted.

00:03:37.741 --> 00:03:41.010
There's a lot going on in our heads.

00:03:41.473 --> 00:03:43.454
It's just a tremendous amount to process.

00:03:44.067 --> 00:03:46.317
And there's a lot of fear quite honestly.

00:03:46.841 --> 00:03:50.497
Fear and worry about what's to come and what this will mean.

00:03:51.131 --> 00:03:52.480
So I want to acknowledge that.

00:03:52.841 --> 00:04:01.426
And say all the feelings we're feeling are real and legitimate, and need time to work their way through.

00:04:01.967 --> 00:04:04.477
And so rest as needed.

00:04:05.266 --> 00:04:14.576
I've found in the last couple of days that it's actually been helpful for me to have some work things that required my attention and that I had to focus on and take care of.

00:04:15.206 --> 00:04:17.966
But that were not directly related to election stuff.

00:04:18.297 --> 00:04:22.586
Just ongoing things in my work that required I be present and fully focused.

00:04:22.706 --> 00:04:32.995
And those were actually a lovely respite in a sense, because it allowed me to bring my full focus and positive energy to something that I really care about.

00:04:33.535 --> 00:04:37.634
Working with clients, working with colleagues who I value and respect.

00:04:38.747 --> 00:04:48.557
And if you're a person who tends to deal with upset by throwing themselves into their work, then that's your coping strategy.

00:04:48.677 --> 00:04:55.230
But just be aware that whatever feelings you're feeling, need room.

00:04:55.771 --> 00:05:00.930
And it is not healthy for us to just shove them aside and say, I don't have time for that.

00:05:00.980 --> 00:05:02.120
I have to this, I have to that.

00:05:02.151 --> 00:05:03.380
I have all these demands.

00:05:03.951 --> 00:05:07.641
Yes, of course, we all have things that we have to attend to no matter what.

00:05:08.365 --> 00:05:10.675
But make space for yourself.

00:05:10.975 --> 00:05:17.754
Be gentle with yourself and create time for rest and acknowledge that your team needs this as well.

00:05:18.908 --> 00:05:21.630
People are feeling pretty fragile right now.

00:05:21.961 --> 00:05:24.175
And our bandwidth is lower.

00:05:24.475 --> 00:05:29.605
Our capacity to tolerate difficult stuff is lower.

00:05:30.545 --> 00:05:32.524
People's nerves are pretty raw.

00:05:32.975 --> 00:05:38.591
And so just a reminder to us all, to be gentle with ourselves and with one another.

00:05:39.130 --> 00:05:45.641
And to bring an extra measure of caring and kindness to our work and to the people in our lives.

00:05:46.475 --> 00:05:54.761
The other thing is it's really okay right now to go out of your way to surround yourself with people who are like-minded.

00:05:55.305 --> 00:06:00.644
And who understand what you're experiencing and who are going through similar emotions.

00:06:01.168 --> 00:06:02.367
To the extent that you can.

00:06:03.007 --> 00:06:07.458
Sometimes you can't avoid exposure to folks who do not understand what we're going through.

00:06:07.637 --> 00:06:11.867
But to the extent that is possible, give yourself that gift as well.

00:06:12.548 --> 00:06:18.240
And this is all important because we want to stay healthy physically, emotionally.

00:06:18.858 --> 00:06:21.480
Because we still have people we have to serve.

00:06:22.081 --> 00:06:24.644
And they need us more than ever now.

00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:36.517
And we also now are going to be facing an extra level of work that is about dealing with the new threat environment that we're about to enter.

00:06:37.218 --> 00:06:42.380
And I'm going to talk about that a little bit and what we're beginning to understand about it.

00:06:42.771 --> 00:06:48.524
But before I do that, one of the things that I think is going to be critical for all of us.

00:06:48.785 --> 00:07:03.880
In not only getting through this immediate period and in the months ahead, but also doing more than just getting through, actually finding our way to powerful and positive action that will make a difference.

00:07:05.021 --> 00:07:09.281
And one of the things that's going to be absolutely critical in that process is vision.

00:07:09.980 --> 00:07:12.891
Vision is going to be more important now than ever before.

00:07:13.415 --> 00:07:21.704
We will all need to be deeply grounded in our positive vision for what we want the world to look like.

00:07:22.321 --> 00:07:25.860
And specifically what you want the world to look like for the people you serve.

00:07:26.781 --> 00:07:29.300
Because it's what pulls us forward.

00:07:29.961 --> 00:07:35.600
When things are bad and ugly, and there are a lot of threats coming at us at once.

00:07:35.661 --> 00:07:39.821
It is very easy to get stuck in reactive mode.

00:07:40.451 --> 00:07:44.831
And to just feel like, okay, there's a threat over there.

00:07:44.831 --> 00:07:45.610
There's a threat over there.

00:07:45.610 --> 00:07:46.600
We've got to respond.

00:07:47.050 --> 00:07:52.978
And all you have bandwidth for is that, and then you don't see out beyond it.

00:07:53.658 --> 00:07:55.997
And that's dangerous territory.

00:07:56.718 --> 00:08:07.098
One of the very important functions of vision is that it allows us, it calls upon us, to look out beyond what's immediately in front of our face.

00:08:07.968 --> 00:08:12.228
And to stay grounded in that larger vision for where we're trying to go.

00:08:12.877 --> 00:08:18.834
And because of the nature of what is likely to be the threat environment.

00:08:19.704 --> 00:08:28.225
There will be threats not only to the people we serve, but there will also be threats to our organization's ability to exist.

00:08:29.064 --> 00:08:35.831
There may very well be attacks on the government infrastructure that supports the work that we do.

00:08:35.980 --> 00:08:41.051
For any of us who have government funding of any kind, there could be real threats there.

00:08:41.530 --> 00:08:49.721
So while we want to be aware and alert, we don't want to be trapped in reactive mode because that limits our options.

00:08:49.750 --> 00:08:52.230
It causes us to think more narrowly.

00:08:52.831 --> 00:08:56.311
And it causes us to become smaller.

00:08:56.898 --> 00:08:57.857
And to hide.

00:08:58.548 --> 00:09:07.168
And we need exactly the opposite in a threatening environment, especially because we are responsible to the people we serve.

00:09:07.855 --> 00:09:17.738
And we have an opportunity to not only serve them, but also advocate on their behalf to help protect against the policies that would deeply harm them.

00:09:18.191 --> 00:09:19.841
We have an obligation to do that.

00:09:20.410 --> 00:09:22.571
And if we're in a defensive crouch, we can't.

00:09:23.490 --> 00:09:28.794
We can only do that when we're able to stand up fully in our power and say, All right then.

00:09:28.884 --> 00:09:32.755
We have an important role here and we must fill it.

00:09:33.785 --> 00:09:36.395
Vision is essential to that.

00:09:36.576 --> 00:09:39.451
It gives us focus, it gives us strength.

00:09:39.902 --> 00:09:44.158
It gives us the desire to move toward that visionary future.

00:09:44.761 --> 00:09:49.532
And it's going to be a very important thing for all of us to have in the next couple of years.

00:09:50.562 --> 00:09:53.089
Without question, there is heavy work ahead.

00:09:53.932 --> 00:09:57.558
And the specific nature of that heavy work is not yet clear.

00:09:58.216 --> 00:09:59.985
It will reveal itself over time.

00:10:00.572 --> 00:10:05.989
You know, unfortunately, the playbook that Donald Trump ran on was Project 2025.

00:10:06.708 --> 00:10:16.389
And that is a vast array of policy proposals that would be deeply damaging to many of the people we serve.

00:10:16.389 --> 00:10:23.042
And deeply damaging to the idea that government funding should support any of this work.

00:10:23.615 --> 00:10:30.471
There's far more threatening stuff and One could do an entire series of podcast episodes just on what's in there.

00:10:31.225 --> 00:10:32.936
That's not helpful at this time.

00:10:33.788 --> 00:10:46.298
What I think is helpful is for us to simply acknowledge right now that we will have two levels of work that we will need to step up to in the coming weeks and months and years.

00:10:46.568 --> 00:10:53.078
And that is not only maintaining the highest quality services and advocating on behalf of the people we serve.

00:10:53.168 --> 00:10:58.985
It's also going to be protecting the resources and protecting the infrastructure that supports that.

00:10:59.576 --> 00:11:06.731
And joining in coalition with the many, many other organizations that are going to be doing similar work.

00:11:07.511 --> 00:11:12.552
The very important thing to remember in this process is that we are most certainly not alone.

00:11:13.028 --> 00:11:19.532
There are hundreds of advocacy groups that stand ready to tackle this work.

00:11:20.131 --> 00:11:24.658
And we want to tap into that and align ourselves with them.

00:11:25.048 --> 00:11:27.869
And support them even as they support us.

00:11:28.629 --> 00:11:29.889
But that's in the future.

00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:34.918
For now, I think what's important for us to do is take care of ourselves.

00:11:35.339 --> 00:11:38.428
Make sure that our team is taking care of themselves.

00:11:38.958 --> 00:11:41.749
And that we're being kind and gentle with one another.

00:11:42.519 --> 00:11:45.639
And that we are grounding ourselves deeply in vision.

00:11:46.599 --> 00:11:51.969
And if you and your team haven't revisited vision in a while, or even if you have.

00:11:52.475 --> 00:11:58.446
It would be a very positive and inspiring thing to do in the next couple of weeks.

00:11:59.131 --> 00:12:00.121
Give people a minute.

00:12:00.241 --> 00:12:05.662
Cause we all need a minute with just the deep emotionality of, what we've experienced.

00:12:06.292 --> 00:12:10.211
So give folks a few days to get out of the worst of the emotional pain.

00:12:10.751 --> 00:12:15.091
But then let's rally and start to take a look at what is our vision.

00:12:15.121 --> 00:12:20.056
What is our vision for the way we want life to be for the people we serve?

00:12:20.145 --> 00:12:21.885
What are we aiming for?

00:12:22.365 --> 00:12:27.676
What does it look like when they are fully thriving and our community is fully thriving?

00:12:28.365 --> 00:12:30.615
And ground yourself in that vision.

00:12:31.096 --> 00:12:32.956
Because that's what will carry us forward.

00:12:33.956 --> 00:12:37.076
Through all of the difficult work that lies ahead.

00:12:37.605 --> 00:12:39.495
Coming into this healthy.

00:12:39.840 --> 00:12:43.607
Coming into this having taken care of our physical and emotional health.

00:12:43.607 --> 00:12:45.138
And continuing to do so.

00:12:45.138 --> 00:12:46.638
This is not a one-time deal.

00:12:47.065 --> 00:12:50.575
It's not just the next couple of days where we need to take care of ourselves.

00:12:50.845 --> 00:12:56.491
This needs to become part of our organizational culture and part of how people operate in the group.

00:12:57.105 --> 00:12:59.054
And that should be modeled by the leaders.

00:12:59.644 --> 00:13:01.445
There is no martyrdom prize.

00:13:01.914 --> 00:13:04.975
Martyrdom only leads to burnout and we can't afford that.

00:13:04.975 --> 00:13:06.784
We can't afford to have any of us burn out.

00:13:07.225 --> 00:13:08.784
So we got to take care of each other.

00:13:09.054 --> 00:13:11.455
We've got to take care of ourselves and take care of one another.

00:13:12.264 --> 00:13:21.595
And then ground ourselves in vision so that we can be prepared to fully stand in our power and take the action that's going to be needed.

00:13:22.315 --> 00:13:29.034
To make sure that we continue to move toward that vision and we don't let anything get in the way.

00:13:29.871 --> 00:13:32.542
Thanks for listening and I'll see you in the next episode.
